I graduated from I.c in 1962 as a Physical therapy major. Our senior year was spent at Albert Einstein college of medicine in the Bronx New York, where I met my husband of 56 years who was a medical student. My daughter Amy Slansky Linnell graduated IC in 1994 and my granddaughter Allie Colleran is graduating this May! My grandson Michael Samse will be in the class of 2022 studying music production. Mr. David McKeith was the only professor during my years at Ithaca College who expected me and taught me to think about U.S. History. He asked his students what assumptions were made before certain events or decisions. I did not understand then the meaning of an assumption. I had never been asked or expected to think about history, only to regurgitate facts which I studied. During his lectures, he taught his students to think, to analyze history. He will always be remembered for helping me 1:1 during his office hours to develop my way of thinking. He was a wonderful teacher.

I lived in the towers for three years before moving downtown. The East Tower will forever have a place in my heart. That building, a beacon of lights on the hill, needing A/C, renovations, a good cleaning and some pesticides was where I first learned to be on my own, fall in love, pay a phone bill, share a bathroom with too many girls and start to grow up. Did I mention I had a corner room with a lake view? From my first night on campus until my many visits as an alum, those towers are my welcoming beacon to Ithaca College.

I am a proud member of the first Ithaca College Master's Degree speech-language pathology and audiology class. We started in the fall of 1966 and we had to demonstrate that we could not only successfully complete our graduate classes but could also conduct research and defend our thesis in front of all speech-language pathology and audiology faculty and students. I know at least three of us did it although it was a struggle for me to write it. It was well worth it. The program has been successful and produces many fine professionals including my wife, Irene.

I never imagined seeing an event like this, on a major network, except for the following year when IC again played for the Division 3 football championship. They may have lost again, but set the standard for the future. (Winning in 1979, 1988, 1991).

Students and professors in the School of Humanities and Sciences and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance have developed the WeeBot, a device to help children with disabilities become more mobile. Children who cannot crawl or walk independently often lack motivation and self-confidence when socializing. Kids with mobility impairments often cannot use a wheelchair until they’re two years of age, but by using the WeeBot (a Wii balance board, a robot and sonar) infants as young as five months old can maneuver around a room and benefit from the development that comes with independent mobility.

After being rear-ended in a minor collision, Jessica Schwartz '05 felt hazy and had focused pain in her skull. She was told to take a week off from work to rest completely, but was not able to return until 14 months later due to complications with balance, vision, head, neck and shoulder pain, short-term memory loss, self expression, and depression. Her difficult journey back to a place of normality motivated her to create a concussion education program for healthcare professionals to dispel the misconceptions and lack of information available regarding concussion treatment and management.

With an absentee immigrant father, Ricardo Gomez-Perez ’14 and Alex Gomez-Perez ’15, M.S. ’17 were left to fend for themselves against the pull of Brentwood gangs. Fortunately, two IC alumni intervened. Carlos Restrepo ’02 and KC Beach ’05 saw their own personal experiences and lack of male guidance mirrored in the young men, and decided to become figures in the boys’ lives. The chain of mentors began with Bob Panariello ’86, who influenced Carlos and KC through wrestling, who, along with their high school coach, Ralph Napolitano, guided Ricardo and Alex through high school wrestling, Ithaca College, and beyond.

An eight-year-old informing someone that he’s afraid to get on a horse isn’t necessarily extraordinary. But when it happened during a therapy program for children with autism, speech-language pathologist Tina Caswell, a Professor in the Department of Speech-language Pathology and Audiology, considered it a breakthrough. The boy, who was nonverbal, interacted with her by using an iPad with a speech-generating application. Through horseback riding and iPads, Tina proves that just because they are non verbal, does not mean they they do not have anything to share.

When Alex Moore ’07 signed up for a “Proposals, Grants, and Reports” course with professor Patricia Spencer, he never would have expected the impact it would have on his career. After being inspired by the required reading “Begging for Change,” he emailed the author and founder of DC Central Kitchen and asked for an internship. This was the beginning of an incredible career in fundraising at DCCK and a full circle moment for Alex as his book “The Food Fighters” became a required text for Spencer’s class. A NASA mission to the asteroid 101955 Bennu was launched in September 2016, and IC professor Beth Ellen Clark will oversee the spectroscopy experiments on board the spacecraft set to reach its target in Fall 2018. Data from the mission will help determine the composition and thermophysical properties of the asteroid and shed light on questions about the origin of life on Earth and the formation of our solar system — all by returning a 60-2,000 gram sample to Earth in 2023. One of the experiments will also help predict whether Bennu will collide with Earth in the next century.
